I’m New to Linux – Where Can I Find My Files?

Transitioning from Windows to Linux has been a bit confusing for me, especially when it comes to locating my files. Unlike Windows, which has clear drives, Linux has a different structure and I don't quite understand what the various folders like /etc, /usr, /home, and /root all mean. I hear people say Linux is different and that it doesn't follow a traditional folder structure, but this hasn't made it any easier for a beginner like me. I'm looking for a straightforward explanation of how to find my personal files in Linux Mint and how to navigate the folder structure without getting lost in the terminal.

Your personal files are stored under /home/yourusername, which is pretty much the equivalent of the C:Users folder in Windows. When you open the terminal, you're usually starting in your home directory by default. Most system folders like /etc and /usr contain configuration files and system resources, so you can largely ignore those for everyday use. Just focus on organizing your documents, pictures, etc. in your home folder, and you're all set!

For example, if you make a folder for your games, just create it in /home/yourusername/games.

That explanation is spot on! When I first switched, I spent a lot of time messing around in those other folders too, but yeah, your home directory is basically all you need.
