I'm transitioning from Windows to Linux on my new Asus TUF A16 laptop, which is powered by a Ryzen 9 8940 CPU, a 5070 GPU with 8GB VRAM, 32GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD with an additional 2TB SSD ready to install. After years of dealing with issues in Windows, particularly with Windows 11, I want something that's stable and prioritizes privacy and compatibility. I've got over 30 years of experience as an R&D engineer, so I'm looking for a Linux distribution that's more or less ready to use and doesn't require too much tweaking. I'll primarily be doing image processing and some astro work, and I need to keep using Canon's DPP software while also exploring open-source alternatives. I'd prefer a distribution based in the EU rather than the UK, given my concerns about US influence. Any recommendations?

There isn’t really an 'EU based distro' since the open-source nature means contributors come from all over. However, OpenSUSE could be a solid choice for you. They have a stable version called Leap that suits your preference for stability and offers a great system management tool called YaST. Just keep in mind that even European distros can have ties to US-based code, despite that not being an issue for all users.

Exactly! It's all about the community that contributes. Also, if you're considering privacy, make sure to look into how your hardware interacts with different software.
