Hey everyone! I have a Precision 7750 laptop equipped with 4 DDR4 RAM slots and 4 NVMe SSD slots, and I'm playing around with the idea of turning it into a server or NAS. Most people lean towards 3.5" HDDs for NAS systems because they're cheaper and offer greater storage capacity (around 20-28TB). However, SSDs are more expensive, with options as high as 750-1200 euros for an 8TB drive, while an 8TB HDD is only about 250-300 euros.
I'm curious if there are any "slow" or budget-friendly SSDs out there that could be suitable for storage, similar to how HDDs come in various speeds and purposes (like NAS or enterprise models). Are there cheaper SSDs with varying speeds that I should consider? Thanks for any insights!

You might want to look into Gen 3 M.2 drives. However, keep in mind that SSDs generally aren’t designed for lower speeds, so even these might not be as budget-friendly as you hope. Prices can still be pretty steep.

Yeah, Gen 3 mostly tops out at 1TB from what I've seen, and the low-cost options are often PCIe 4, which is still pretty pricey. It’s odd that there aren’t more slow SSDs available. Maybe the demand just isn’t there.
