I've recently transitioned from a helpdesk position to my first role as a junior sysadmin, and I've got a lot on my plate. My team consists of five members and we manage around 800 users globally, with about 230 in India. So far, I've taken on responsibilities like onboarding and offboarding, laptop imaging, inventory management, and ticket handling, plus I'm diving into basic administration across the tools we use.
Currently, we rely on tools like JumpCloud, Google Workspace, and Slack among others, and I've started creating documentation and learning about automation. My manager encourages me to automate processes and take ownership of certain areas, but I'm not sure where to start.
I'm looking for advice on what I should focus on learning to develop my skills in this environment and what specific automation tasks I should prioritize to streamline our work. Any guidance on technical focus areas, automation tips, or career direction would be incredibly helpful. Thanks a lot!

Definitely prioritize mastering your admin tools, scripting, and finding ways to automate user workflows. It will make your life a lot easier and will help your team dramatically.
Just curious, does Jamf offer any AI features that help with automations?
For onboarding, ensure that your MacOS setup is completely automated using Apple Business Manager and JumpCloud; that should simplify things. For Windows, try implementing Light Touch Deployment with a Provisioning Package to streamline your process.
We already do zero-touch provisioning for Mac. For Windows, we're trying light-touch deployment with user enrolling in JumpCloud, but we can't use USB for provisioning packages.
As a junior sysadmin, it's easy to feel pressure to learn everything, but the key is to really master the tools you use regularly. Don’t stress about being the best at everything—just aim to excel at what’s in front of you. Focus on automating repetitive tasks; if you find yourself doing something repeatedly, look into how you can automate that process to save time. Also, don’t get too hung up on your overall career direction just yet. Concentrate on improving efficiency in your current role. The quicker you can handle tasks, the more time you’ll have to explore learning new things or developing automation scripts. Best of luck!
This is great advice, thank you!

We actually use JumpCloud, not Jamf. JumpCloud doesn't seem to have AI capabilities.
