Help! My PC Turns On for a Second Then Shuts Off After Being Moved

I built my PC and everything was running smoothly until I transported it to my father's office. Now, when I try to power it on, it only stays on for about a second before shutting off completely. I've already reseated the RAM in different slots, tested it with just one stick, removed the CMOS battery to reset the BIOS, and checked all the PSU connections. I even shorted the motherboard pins to test the power button. Despite all these efforts, nothing seems to change, and I'm worried something may have come loose during the move or there might be a deeper issue with the PSU or motherboard. Has anyone encountered a similar problem, and what else can I do to troubleshoot this?

Check the voltage switch on the back of your PSU if it has one; you wouldn’t want to accidentally switch it from 110V to 220V!

I had a similar problem before; moving can shake things loose. If you have a bulky CPU cooler, that might have damaged the motherboard or connections. It's worth doing a thorough visual inspection for anything out of place after transport.

Also, don’t forget about checking the CPU fan or AIO pump headers. Many motherboards will shut down if they don’t detect any cooling solution running, so it's always good to make sure those are connected solidly.

It’s possible a memory card got jostled and isn’t making proper contact. It often causes issues right at power-on when the POST fails. If your motherboard has diagnostic LEDs, check if any codes are being shown to point you in the right direction. Reseating the memory sticks can often solve these issues too.

Double-check that all internal connectors are properly seated, especially the RAM. If all else fails, disconnect non-essential components and try booting the system with just the essentials to see if that changes anything.

I’ve tried that with a different PSU and still get nothing. Pretty sure my motherboard might have shorted somehow.

Make sure to check your GPU if you have a dedicated one. Reseat it just in case it got loose during the move. Also, if the case was open, something could have shifted inside and affected connectivity. Pay attention to your fans when you turn it on — if they’re not spinning, you might want to reseat those connections too. Sometimes the CPU cooler can come loose as well, leading to overheating and an immediate shutdown as a precaution.

It sounds like there might be a loose connection or something causing a short. If you don't spot any obvious issues like screws or metal pieces, try taking the motherboard out of the case and see if it powers on when placed on a non-conductive surface like wood. Also, testing with a different PSU could help narrow down the issue further if you have one available.

Yeah, that's a good idea! I've seen loose screws get lodged under the motherboard before, causing all sorts of chaos. Definitely worth trying!

I did that, and even switched the PSU. Same issue; I think the motherboard might have fried during the transport.
