I had a power outage that damaged my motherboard, and now I'm not sure how to proceed with my build. I have a Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, an RX 9070 XT, and a 1000-watt PSU. I'm not planning to invest 600 euros into a DDR5 kit right now, so I want to stick with my DDR4. Should I just replace my motherboard and keep my current CPU, or would upgrading to a Ryzen 7 5800X or Intel i7-14700K, along with a compatible motherboard, provide a significant performance boost? If I decide to go for a new CPU and motherboard, I want a setup that will last me about three years. Any advice would be appreciated!

It really comes down to what you want to spend. If you can keep your costs under 500 euros, you're in a good spot for an upgrade.
If sticking with AM4 is cost-effective, then go for it. The Ryzen 5800X is a fantastic CPU, but remember to invest in a UPS for power outages — it saves you from situations like this! My systems are all AM4, and I'm pretty satisfied with their performance, especially for 1080p gaming.
What about if I still have an AM4 CPU? Is it worth upgrading to a better one, or should I just switch to Intel?
For a good, budget-friendly option, get a B550 and a 5800X (or 5800X3D if you can find it). This combination will give you room to upgrade in the future without breaking the bank. Once you’re ready, consider upgrading to a 5080 and switching to 64GB of DDR4 RAM to keep up with demands for the next five years. Your RX 9070 XT should hold up fine for 1440p gaming.
Is the 9070 XT still good for 1440p at 165 Hz?
Definitely go for a new B550 motherboard and a Ryzen 5700 or 5800X. It’s an easy upgrade and will set you for a while! If your budget allows, consider adding another 16GB of RAM for better performance.
I've been thinking about RAM too, but I just dropped 800 on my build two months ago, so I might wait for prices to drop before considering an upgrade.
I’d recommend getting a B550 motherboard and a Ryzen 5700X. It’s a solid combo and you should be able to find it at a good price. The 5800X is great, but if you're on a budget and can't find an X3D version, the 5700X will still serve you well.
So you're suggesting the 5700X over the 5800X? I’ve been looking for a good deal on an X3D but no luck.

I’d like to keep it under that as well.
