I'm considering using Kubuntu for a couple of weeks since I really like KDE and prefer it over GNOME. I've done my homework by trying it in a virtual machine and making a checklist for the setup. However, I'm a bit confused about the update cycle. I know Kubuntu has a stable release and a rolling release, and currently, we have Kubuntu 25.10, which is supported until July 2026, and Kubuntu 24.04 LTS, supported until April 2027. If I go with the LTS version, what happens when support ends? Can I just click an upgrade button to move to the next LTS version, or do I have to reinstall it? And how does the process work for the non-LTS version? I've noticed frequent updates in the virtual machine, which would be a hassle if I were using it as my main OS. Any insights would be appreciated!

The LTS release has a two-year cycle and offers a minimum of five years of support. When a new LTS is released, generally within a couple of months you’ll be able to upgrade at the click of a button. As for the non-LTS version, it has a six-month cycle with just nine months of support. Most updates are small, so you can comfortably update every month if you want to.

That’s great to know! I appreciate that I can easily upgrade. I was under the impression that with LTS versions, I'd have to reinstall when a new version came out.
