What’s the Difference Between Sleep and Hibernate, and Why Won’t My Laptop Cooperate?

I'm using Windows 11, and I've enabled hibernate on my laptop because modern sleep modes aren't working as I'd like. However, after some updates, I'm having issues where my laptop refuses to stay in hibernate or respect screen timeout settings. Even when I close the lid, it wakes up randomly. Hibernate seems to work fine on my desktop, but on my laptop, the screen won't time out no matter what adjustments I make. Even when the laptop is on battery, the screen stays on and doesn't dim or turn off. When I close the lid, the screen turns off, but it won't go into hibernation unless I manually set it. How can I resolve this?

Hibernate is supposed to not use power, but it can vary based on many factors like hardware and BIOS settings. If your laptop is still waking up when it’s plugged in, it might be due to settings in the power options. Check to see if there's any option that allows devices to wake the computer; this could be causing the issue.

Honestly, I've avoided using sleep or hibernate for years. I've found it more reliable just to shut down fully. I get that hibernate is supposed to save your session, but I've seen it act inconsistently across different devices. With hibernate, your machine saves the state to the disk and uses a tiny amount of power during that time, which I think beats the purpose sometimes. If you really don't want your laptop waking up unexpectedly, just shut it down completely instead of relying on those modes.

The main difference is that sleep mode keeps your current session in RAM, so it's faster to wake up but drains power, whereas hibernate saves everything to the disk and uses almost no power, so it’s better for longer pauses. But it's possible that recent driver updates or Windows updates are messing with your ability to hibernate correctly. Have you checked if there are any driver updates, especially for the chipset? That’s often where the problem lies.

I haven't done driver updates recently because I'm afraid they'll force a restart. It started acting up after the last round of updates about two weeks ago.

Many users have experienced this bug where their laptops wake up when plugged in. It’s frustrating! My tip is to connect your laptop to power and then go into sleep or hibernate, or just skip the charging altogether. That may help keep it in the right state.
