I've got this old hard drive that I salvaged from my first PC, and I'm eager to recover some files from it. I purchased a "USB 2.0 to IDE/SATA Hard Disk Adapter Cable," which was suggested to me. I've connected everything properly, including the 4-pin power cable from my PC, but the hard drive isn't appearing in Windows 11 at all, not even as a USB drive. I can hear it spinning up, though. I've tried various troubleshooting steps from YouTube and also enabled the Compatibility Support Module in my BIOS settings. I'm really hoping someone can help me figure this out!

It’s possible that the hard drive is using a filesystem that Windows 11 can't recognize, especially if it was formatted when it was running Windows XP. Do you recall if it was working fine when you last used it? Also, if your old computer stopped functioning, what happened to the drive?
You might want to check the jumper settings on the drive. Make sure it’s set to "Master" based on the label on the drive itself. If the drive has any bridged pins, that could be preventing it from being detected properly.
I did try adjusting the jumpers, both with and without them in different configurations, but it still didn’t work.
It sounds like the adapter might not be compatible with Windows 11 or is malfunctioning. The drive should spin up just from power, but that doesn't mean it will be recognized. A lot of these older adapters can be finicky, and if you have the option, you might consider trying a USB 3.0 adapter for better performance.
Have you thought about booting from a Linux live USB? Sometimes Linux can detect drives that Windows struggles with. It's worth a shot!

Yeah, I think it was running XP last time I used it. The old PC was fine until we got a new laptop, but now I just have the HDD.
