Should I Pursue a Career in Software Engineering?

I've been feeling a lot of pressure from family to jump into the IT field, specifically in software engineering, mainly because of the attractive salaries. While that sounds good, I've also heard a lot of mixed opinions about job stability in tech, especially with AI rapidly advancing. On top of that, I've always struggled with math since middle school, which makes me wonder if that would be a major drawback in this field. I'm really looking for some honest advice and insights on whether pursuing this path is a good idea or if I should think twice.

The job market for software engineers is indeed quite saturated, especially after the pandemic. AI's impact is still unfolding, but if you’re only interested in the money, you might want to reconsider. Enjoying what you do should be a top priority.

While software and IT curriculums can be math-heavy, most jobs only require basic arithmetic skills. The real question for you is whether you have any passion for technology. If you're just after the paycheck and not genuinely interested, it could lead to dissatisfaction down the line.

Salaries in the tech industry aren’t what they used to be, and there's definitely more competition for roles now. Junior positions can be especially tricky to land, so just keep that in mind before making a decision.

Be prepared for a lot of self-directed learning and continuous upskilling if you choose this career. Technology changes quickly, and job security isn't guaranteed. If you're looking for a stable 9 to 5, software engineering might not be the best fit.

You will need to have solid math and problem-solving skills, which is why engineering and computer science programs include high-level math courses.
