Best Linux Distro for a Newbie Gamer Switching from Windows?

I'm looking to start using a Linux distribution on a new laptop. My main reason for switching is my frustration with Microsoft. I'd love to get advice on a few things:

- What should I consider when choosing a new laptop? I know hardware compatibility is crucial, but most tips I've come across come after the fact.

- Will Linux support the software I need? I'm planning to use programs like GPlates, Blender, and some .exe/.msi files, plus various Python scripts.

- Regarding gaming, the titles I enjoy such as Stardew Valley and Minecraft do work on Linux, but I heavily mod them. How does Linux affect performance, and can performance issues be resolved easily?

Currently, I'm interested in Zorin OS due to its user-friendly interface, but after testing it on a 10-year-old ThinkPad E560, I found it quite choppy while running modded Stardew Valley, and I struggled with Steam and file navigation. I'd love any insights from you all!

For hardware, I'd recommend going with laptops that have AMD GPUs—they're generally easier to get running with Linux since they're more plug-and-play compared to Nvidia, which usually needs driver installations. As for software, keep in mind that .exe and .msi files won’t run natively on Linux, but you can use Wine or Proton for compatibility. Blender works well on Linux, and I've heard good things about GPlates fitting into the Linux environment. Python should run smoothly as long as your scripts don’t rely on Windows-specific features.

I think Fedora or Linux Mint could be great options for you. They have good support for gaming and programming tools. Fedora tends to have newer software in its repositories, which might come in handy. Just remember that performance can vary across games—some might run better on Linux thanks to tools like Proton, which helps bridge the system calls. Overall, you'll just have to check specific games for any performance issues.

If you love modding, most games do run fine on Linux using Proton, especially those available on Steam. You might hit some snags with file paths when modding, but for the most part, you can just replace files directly in the game folders. If you encounter a tricky mod that requires Windows executables, be prepared for some troubleshooting, but it shouldn't be a deal breaker. You can also look at ProtonDB for reports on how well specific games perform on Linux.
