I recently had an interview for a company that I was really excited about, but I didn't make it past the interview due to predominantly culture fit questions. I was prepared for more technical discussions on coding or architecture, but instead, the interview was mostly focused on my past role and achievements, which seemed to emphasize fit over technical ability.

With 4-5 years as a full stack developer on a contracting platform with a stable user base, I found that the interviewer was more interested in stories about how I took initiative without waiting for instructions, rather than discussing specific technical projects. I shared some examples, but he didn't seem impressed.

I'm feeling frustrated that I didn't get to showcase my problem-solving skills or technical insights and instead got filtered out on questions about my past feedback experiences. It seems like hiring managers prefer candidates who can describe themselves as 10X developers—people who independently create major projects on little notice. I want to demonstrate my skills effectively without having to resort to exaggerated claims about my contributions.

Is pursuing my own projects a good way to enhance my profile? I'm considering launching an app to showcase my initiative and ability to create impactful solutions, as it seems that those traits are highly valued.
