Hey everyone,
I'm a gameplay programmer with years of experience, now in my 40s, and I'm considering a shift in my career path. I've recently started exploring AWS, especially since new Amazon offices have opened in my city. I applied for a position there to better understand the skills I'll need, but I still have a few months to prepare.
I've started with the Cloud Practitioner certification as a foundation, but I realize AWS is quite vast. My main focus is to narrow it down to gaming, as I believe that's where my background can shine. I'm keen on learning about services like GameLift, orchestration, and matchmaking, but I'm not sure what certification path to follow to best position myself in this field. I prefer structured learning over random online tutorials.
Any advice or recommendations from those of you with experience in AWS and gaming would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Transitioning from game development to AWS is definitely a smart move, especially since the gaming industry is pushing cloud technology more than many other fields. If you already have a tech background, consider skipping the Cloud Practitioner certification and aim for the Solutions Architect Associate instead. This will give you a solid foundation. From there, you can specialize in GameLift for multiplayer games, Lambda and API Gateway for backend services, and DynamoDB for game state management. From my experience working with AWS, the certification might get you in the door, but hands-on experience, especially with latency optimization and game server management, is what will really impress during interviews.

That makes sense! Given the ups and downs in the gaming industry, I want to broaden my skill set. Do you think I can handle the Solutions Architect certification without any prior AWS experience? It sounds like a solid plan. I’ve started watching tutorials for GameLift and AWS game tech, so I’ll keep at it. I’m already knee-deep in the Cloud Practitioner certification, so I’ll finish that before moving on. Thanks for the insights!
