I'm trying to download a .exe file for a Windows application because I want to run it using Wine on my Linux system. I get the feeling Linux is blocking this download, as I've tried adjusting security settings and using the xdg desktop portal with no luck. How do others manage to download and install .exe files on Linux?

If you share the link to the .exe file, I might be able to assist you better. Knowing the exact circumstances can help solve the issue faster.

Rather than downloading it directly, have you thought about trying to get the .exe from inside Wine? That could simplify the process.

Linux is pretty flexible with file extensions, so it's not preventing the download of the .exe file. It sounds like there might be something else at play here. Have you checked your browser settings? Sometimes the browser itself can block certain downloads. Also, make sure you're using a reliable method to run the .exe in Wine—it can take some extra steps to get that working right.

This is typical community support I've come to love since moving to Linux! To help you out, I’d need a bit more info: 1) Which Linux distro are you on? 2) Is there a Linux equivalent for what you’re trying to run? 3) Any error messages in your browser? Knowing these could be crucial for finding the right solution.

Just a heads up, Linux won't inherently block .exe downloads—extensions aren’t really a big deal here. If you’re having trouble, let’s dig into what browser you’re using and where you’re trying to download the file to. Also, if you're on a Flatpak, that could affect things too.
