I'm curious about the differences between Thunderbolt 3 and USB 4 ports on AM5 motherboards. I know that many AM5 boards feature USB 4 ports that are compatible with Thunderbolt 3, but not all of them support this. Some are clearly marked, while others aren't. Recently, I received a Thunderbolt 3 dock from OWC with several ports that I'd love to utilize on my desktop, particularly its FireWire 800 port. From what I gather, I don't need PCIe tunneling or any advanced features, but I want to be sure which AM5 boards with USB 4 ports will actually meet my needs. I'd prefer not to shell out for an expensive motherboard with a discrete Thunderbolt 4 PCIe card and headers if I can avoid it. Any advice would be appreciated! By the way, the dock I got is the OWCTB3DK13PSG.

I’d suggest narrowing down your options to 3 or 4 motherboards within your budget. After that, check out user reviews or experiences specifically for those models. It’ll give you a better idea of how well they handle Thunderbolt connectivity and if they’re actually compatible with your dock.

That’s the tricky part though; what specific features should I be looking for? Just boards that have USB 4 ports?
