Hey everyone! I'm new to PC building and looking to upgrade my setup a bit. I want to ensure that the components I'm considering will work properly together, so I'd like some input.
Currently, my specs are:
- CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2620 v2
- CPU Cooler: Unidentifiable Aerocool Unit
- Motherboard: Atermiter X79 v1.3
- GPU: Asus TUF Gaming Nvidia GTX 1650 4GB VRAM
- RAM: 4x4GB Samsung DDR3 (RDIMM) 1600 MHz
- PSU: Aerocool VX 500 Plus
- Storage: 1x 480GB SATA SSD, 1x 1TB Crucial X8 External SSD, 1x 2TB Seagate Portable HDD
I'm planning to upgrade the CPU to an Intel Xeon E5-2667 v2 and the RAM to 4x8GB Apple DDR3 (RDIMM) 1866 MHz. Will this combo work well, or do you have better suggestions?

I’d recommend swapping out that power supply first. It's concerning if it has no overload protection and is really cheap. A good PSU can prevent damage to other hardware, and spending a little more now can save you a lot later. Then consider your CPU and RAM upgrades.
If the E5-2667 v2 is only around $25 where you are, that could be a solid upgrade for the price! Just be careful with the RAM you choose; make sure to look for compatible server/ECC DDR3. Also, make sure your PSU can handle new components.
Great tip! I’ll definitely check on the PSU's capacity. What do you think about changing the PSU first?
Honestly, your current setup is pretty outdated. If you're just looking for a quick upgrade, I get it, but you might be better off saving for a more substantial upgrade down the line. Consider holding off on spending too much right now, especially if prices are high for components.
Yeah, that makes sense. I thought about saving up more for a bigger upgrade eventually. Just trying to make due for now while prices are all over the place.

Good point! I'll look into getting a more reliable PSU before changing anything else.
