Looking for Tips on Working with a Full Stack Developer for My First E-Commerce Site

I'm just starting my startup and planning to hire a full stack developer through Upwork for my e-commerce website. Since this is my first time managing a developer, I'm looking for advice on best practices for collaborating with a remote worker. I'd really like guidance on code security, the handover process, what a typical workflow looks like, how to manage logins and account creation, and pretty much any aspect of the process. Any tips or insights would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Here’s a solid plan: 1. Use a code repository like GitHub to keep track of everything. 2. Implement a ticketing system (like Redmine or Trac) to share your progress and tasks with your remote developer. This way, you can manage the project effectively without needing constant oversight.

Be cautious when hiring from platforms like Upwork or Fiverr; quality can vary greatly. It's critical to have clear expectations, or you might end up disappointed. If possible, find a friend who's a web developer to help navigate this journey. They don’t need to be super experienced but can help you with pricing, quality, and administration. In your case, since you have a backend already set up to handle e-commerce, revisiting your front-end design and development with someone who has expertise in that area might be the way to go!

Thanks for your insights! I’m trying to learn as much as possible. I get content from an SFTP feed, which I think is XML, and I want to style this on the front end and create custom landing pages. The backend does have a checkout process, so I’m really looking to refine the front end now. Any tips about that would be hugely appreciated!

If you're focused on functionality, consider not starting from scratch. Using platforms like Shopify could streamline things a lot for you!

I appreciate the suggestion! I definitely need to explore Shopify more—it’s an interesting option I hadn’t considered before.
