Should I Pursue Graphic Design or Coding for Game Development?

I'm 24 and couldn't finish school originally due to personal issues, but I've been feeling lost in coding basics. I dream of making a game—maybe using Godot—but I'm struggling with the technical side. My preference leans towards the design and graphic field rather than a career strictly in coding. I spent three years in an animation course, and I've been drawing for several years. Given my background, should I enroll in a two-year coding program, or would art school be a better fit? What are some alternative ways to learn coding, especially for game development?

Why not start learning online? Platforms like Udemy or YouTube have tons of tutorials for both coding and game design. You could keep your day job and work on game projects in your spare time—that way, you can see if you really enjoy it before committing to a school program.

Look at successful indie developers like Eric Barone (Stardew Valley creator). He's self-taught and did it all while working. He learned coding in his spare time and even created his own game engine. You don't necessarily need formal schooling—just dedication!

You could also just jump into development. Download Unity, pick up a tutorial, and start making your game! Sometimes just getting your hands dirty is the best way to learn, and there are many free resources available.

It sounds like you're leaning more towards design, so maybe you should focus on that. If you're not really interested in coding as a job, it might not be worth pursuing a coding degree. Instead, consider diving into graphic design or game art. You've got art experience, which could really help you in this field.
