I recently moved to a new city and want to develop a language exchange app that focuses on in-person meetups. Users will create profiles, search for others, and once they find a match, they'll exchange contact information to schedule a meetup. The app will allow users to filter their search based on the languages they want to learn, age range, gender, interests, meeting location, and preferred times.
However, I'm worried about launching the app with too few users. I've gotten about 20 early users so far through expat groups and Facebook, but I'm not sure that's enough to keep people engaged initially. A friend suggested showing alternate results when there are no matches, which I might implement. I'd love to hear strategies for attracting users to avoid losing them right at launch. Thanks for your help!

It’s interesting how many founders struggle with marketing. It’s a challenging task that often requires a tailored approach. Lean into that manual marketing process; it's important for your launch.
You could look at how Tinder tackled this issue. They initially launched in specific universities rather than trying to go broad. By focusing on a smaller audience, they were able to build up a user base quickly before expanding to an entire city. This strategy could help you your app gain traction in a targeted area before going wider.
You might try the "invitation" approach, where users can invite friends to join the app. People love exclusive invites, and it could help build your initial user base.
To stand out, think about what your app offers that platforms like HelloTalk don’t. Getting involved with local meetup groups might provide insights into user needs. Many people prefer group settings for their first interactions. Gaining feedback on what users want can help you refine your app's purpose, especially focusing on specific challenges they face.
The idea is mainly to step away from your phone and get straight into an actual meetup. No chats, no videocalls, no social platform feeling etc.. I'd actually want to list existing local meetups for users who prefer those settings. Thank you for your insights! I'll definitely use your tips!
Consider whether users in your niche prioritize results or design. If it’s results, perhaps advertising on platforms like Product Hunt could help you reach interested users. It’s not my area, but I think targeted marketing can definitely help your launch.
Well the results aka other users is the vital organ of the app. So I would need to find people that actually live in the city and not random users. Thank you for the wishes, have a great day! 🙂

That makes a lot of sense! Well my webapp would be free so I definitely have no deep pockets haha.
