How Can I Boost My Linux Skills in a Virtual Lab Environment?

I'm currently building a small-business environment using VirtualBox, which includes components like an AD domain controller for authentication, DHCP, DNS, an Exchange server, an Azure sync server, Windows 11 client machines, and Linux client machines/servers. I'm looking for suggestions on additional Linux implementations to enhance my skills aside from simply integrating Linux boxes into my AD domain. I've been facing challenges in phone screens and interviews concerning Linux knowledge, and I want to improve my confidence and capability in this area. For some context, I'm a senior sysadmin with eight years of IT experience, currently at an Ivy League institution. I've primarily worked with Windows, Azure, and M365, and I'm in the process of finishing my master's in cloud computing systems. So I'm not a newbie, but my Linux skills are somewhat basic. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

You should definitely set up some standard services like a web server or DNS/DHCP on Linux instead of sticking to just Windows. This will give you real-world troubleshooting experience with logs and permissions. Look into homelab setups to find ideas on what to implement, focusing on tools commonly used in the industry.

I’m mainly applying for cloud or systems engineering roles, and while my background is mostly Windows, I've done some Linux training. Setting up a pure Linux environment sounds like a great idea to build skills that are actually used in production!
