Why Can’t I Drag and Drop Files on Linux?

I recently switched to Linux to escape the clutches of Microsoft Windows, but I'm facing a huge frustration with drag and drop functionality. I rely on dragging and dropping photos from the web to my desktop or other applications dozens of times a day for my workflow. Unfortunately, I've found that this feature doesn't seem to work on Fedora Linux. I tried installing the extension "I'm a gentleman," but it hasn't helped much; I still end up manually uploading everything, which is really slowing me down. I'm close to considering going back to Windows because of this issue!

It sounds like you might be using a desktop environment that doesn’t support what you're trying to do. I’ve had no issues with drag and drop when using Thunar in XFCE, but I've struggled with it in other environments. It's worth experimenting with a few different setups to find one that meets your needs.

Exactly! The environment can definitely make a huge difference. Finding one that works for your workflow will definitely save you a lot of headaches.

You might want to look into your desktop environment settings. In GNOME, for example, the desktop doesn’t show icons unless configured. However, in traditional setups like Cinnamon, drag and drop tends to work better. Linux setups can vary greatly, and that could be impacting your experience.

I've noticed that not all desktop environments handle drag and drop the same way! Using something like Cinnamon could help with getting that functionality back.

I just tried drag and drop in Ubuntu 24 with Firefox, and it worked flawlessly! It might be worth testing it out on a different distribution, like Ubuntu, to see if it functions better for you.

The way the desktop is treated varies between different Linux desktop environments. Have you tried dragging and dropping into a file manager like Nautilus? People often assume the desktop can behave like a storage area, but it’s handled differently in various setups.
