Why Do Some Apps Work Even Though My Internet Is Turned Off?

I recently had my internet disconnected due to a billing issue—my provider mistakenly sent the bills to a non-existent email, so I didn't pay them on time. Most of my internet is down, but I noticed that certain apps like Google and YouTube still function on my phone. I'm wondering why this is happening and if I should be concerned about any additional charges for using these apps. Also, I removed my SIM card and am still able to access YouTube, while on my PC I can't reach any websites, although I can log into Steam and use family-shared games, but can't download or access the store.

Have you thought about the possibility of a partial internet connection? Sometimes, ISPs will restrict access but leave certain sites or apps available. You could ping those sites to check your connection status.

I'm not sure how to do that on my phone, but since my PC can’t even access YouTube, it feels like it shouldn’t be possible. Your explanations help clarify things, though!

It sounds like you might actually be using cached data on your phone. If you've checked your phone without the SIM card and still have access to YouTube, that suggests the app might be pulling from previously saved data rather than a live connection. Just something to consider!

That makes sense, but since I can still watch live streams, I'm not sure it's just cached data. It gets confusing!

I find it odd that some apps can still function if your internet is turned off. It really raises questions about how your ISP is handling the disconnection. You might want to check if any accounts are still active with the old provider.

You're right, it does seem a bit strange. I just assumed that all would be cut off. It's complicated since I switched providers and didn't realize they were still billing me.

It might be an issue with DNS resolution. Try changing your PC's DNS server to something like 1.1.1.1 and see if that helps. Just a thought!

Great suggestion! I'm out shopping right now, but I'll give that a shot when I get home.
