Hey everyone! We've just wrapped up enrolling our Windows laptops, and now we're looking to enroll about 25 remote MacBooks in Intune. The users are pretty tech-savvy, but right now, we have zero visibility or control over these Macs and we want to enroll them without wiping any devices. I've heard mixed things about Apple Business Manager (ABM) — it seems like they require a wipe to register the devices. Is it possible to skip ABM and just go with Intune? Is ABM really necessary for us?

Yes, ABM is essential for managing Apple devices effective. Without it, you're essentially running the risk of not having full control over the devices. If users were to bind their Apple IDs or wipe the laptops, you wouldn't have a way to reclaim control over them. Plus, with ABM, you get a lot of quality-of-life improvements like automatic provisioning and the ability to push apps from the App Store. So while you can manage them through Intune, it would feel more like BYOD without ABM. If you only have 25 Macs, it might be better to commit to ABM now rather than later.
You won't get full device management capabilities without ABM. It's pretty much required for a smooth operation.
Totally necessary! ABM is super easy to manage and makes everything so much smoother. It's worth it for the control you'll gain.
For sure, skipping ABM isn't a good idea if your company owns the devices. ABM binds each Mac to your business instance, which is a must for proper device management. If you want to keep everything seamless and avoid issues with things like Activation Lock, definitely go with ABM.
