Why Is My Disk Speed So Inconsistent?

I'm experiencing some strange behavior with my disk speed. It sometimes spins up to 150 MB/s but then slows down drastically, eventually dropping to bytes per second. This doesn't happen every time, but it's frequent enough that it's really annoying. Can anyone explain why this happens? Is there something wrong with my setup? I'm using Windows 11 25H2 on an ASUS Tuf Gaming FX705DT laptop, equipped with an AMD Ryzen 7 3750H processor and 8GB RAM.

You might want to check your disk's configuration and status with official tools. ASUS has support available for your model which could help you diagnose the problem. You can also use tools like CrystalDiskInfo and CrystalDiskMark to benchmark your drive and see how it's performing.

The disk speed could vary based on your tasks. For example, copying a bunch of small files usually won't reach the same speeds as transferring one large file, especially if your antivirus is continually scanning those files. What kind of tasks are you doing when you notice this?

Typically, it's during downloads from Steam, which usually involve smaller updates.

What disk model are you using? If it's older, it might have a small cache which could explain the slowdowns. Without knowing the specifics, I can't give you a precise answer, but that could be a factor. Just curious, what model is it?

Sorry about that! It's a Seagate drive, 4TB, and I think I got it around 2 or 3 years ago.

It sounds like your drive could be failing. I'd suggest backing up your data ASAP, just in case. If it’s on its way out, you don’t want to risk losing anything important.
