Career Direction After Being Laid Off: Should I Stay in Software Engineering or Pivot?

I was recently laid off from my job as a Software Engineer II after working at a fintech firm for seven years right out of college, and now I'm feeling lost about my career direction. With the increasing presence of AI in the industry, I'm torn between continuing as a software engineer and exploring other career paths that fit my full-stack development experience, which includes front-end development using Java, JavaScript, Angular, and C#. I still love coding, but the pressure to integrate AI into my work has me questioning the stability of my career. I'm interested in hearing from others who may have made similar pivots into different STEM roles. Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated!

One way to keep your skills sharp is by diving into some open source projects. It's a great way to stretch your abilities without the usual corporate pressures. Plus, many serious projects have strict no-AI policies, which can be a refreshing change!
