Where Did My Hard Drive Space Go?

I've been tracking my hard drive space and I'm puzzled about where some of it has disappeared to. I have four games installed: Overwatch (70GB), PUBG (45GB), The Binding of Isaac: Repentance (1.5GB), and Dead By Daylight (55GB), which adds up to 171.5GB. My overall disk space is 500GB, and after installing everything, I have about 464GB left—which I suspect includes space taken up by Windows 11. Doing the math, I should have approximately 292.5GB free space left after accounting for my games. However, when I check, it only shows 55GB available! I've deleted all temp files and ensure I don't have viruses, plus I'm not using large apps or recording any videos. I just can't figure out where the extra 237GB went. Could there be hidden files or something else going on?

It's a common misconception that a 500GB drive actually gives you 500GB of usable space. In reality, it's usually around 465GB available right off the bat, especially with the OS installed. You should also consider that there may be partitions on the drive for things like recovery or drivers, which can take up space. Using Disk Utility can help you see if there are any hidden partitions. Also, I recommend trying out WinDirStat to visualize where your disk space is being used. You might discover that there's more data than you expected, like cached files or logs that Windows keeps.

Right? Windows 11 can take up significant space on its own. If your games have generated any user data, that could eat into your available space further.

Have you checked for dump files? They can accumulate and take up quite a bit of space. Use WinDirStat or WizTree for fast scanning and find specific file types. I found some .dmp files in my system that were hogging gigabytes! Also, consider cleaning up cache files from uninstalled games, they can stick around even after you've removed the main app.
