Feeling Overwhelmed as a First-Year Computer Science Student

Hey everyone! I'm in my first year of studying computer science in France after switching from international business, and I feel like I've really found my passion. I love what I'm learning, but I'm facing some challenges that I'd love your input on.

First off, I often freeze when I sit down to code on my own. When facing a blank screen, I struggle to know how to start or even how to structure my thoughts. It's frustrating because I want to create projects, but I find it hard to get going. Is this a common experience for beginners? How did you overcome that initial block?

Secondly, I want to deepen my knowledge beyond what we learn in class, but with so many resources out there—like YouTube, online courses, bootcamps, and books—I feel a bit lost. What would you guys recommend for someone in my position who wants to improve quickly?

Lastly, I have some anxiety about AI. It seems to be evolving rapidly, and I'm worried about how it might change the job market for developers. This uncertainty is making me anxious about committing to this field. Have any of you felt this way? What are your thoughts on the future of software development with AI?

I suggest putting your primary focus on your classes and getting your degree—it’s key. Many students who are passionate about coding get derailed by complex courses. Once you finish your degree, you’ll find plenty of time to dive into projects that interest you. Don’t stress about AI right now; just get through your studies!

When coding gets tough, take a break from the screen. Do something relaxing, and you'll often come back with a fresh perspective. It's super common to feel stumped. Stepping away can lead you to that ‘aha!’ moment!

Just keep at it! If you're looking for extra materials, check out Harvard’s CS50 courses online; they're free and fantastic for beginners. Regarding AI, focus on your passion. If you enjoy coding, stick with it. You’ll figure things out over time!

It's totally normal to feel stuck in front of a blank file when you start coding! Try starting small by building tiny projects. You don't have to create something perfect right away. Just get something down on paper, even if it’s just a simple idea. You'll build confidence as you go!

I felt the same way about AI a couple of years ago and was really worried about finding work. But instead of seeing AI as competition, I started using it to assist with my coding. In huge projects, I found that AI can stumble too. It’s important to learn how to fix any mess it makes—there's still a big need for developers who understand what's going on under the hood! Focus on building your skills and projects instead of worrying about AI!
