Issues with Getting a USB to Ethernet Adapter to Work

Hey folks,

I'm having a bit of trouble with a USB to RJ45 adapter that I want to use on my laptop. I'm not too tech-savvy, so I'm sorry if this seems simple. The adapter is recognized in Device Manager as a hidden device, but it isn't functioning correctly. The model is a Corechip SR9900 USB2.0 to Fast Ethernet Adapter.

I tried looking for drivers online, but since this is a corporate laptop, I'm hesitant to download anything that could mess it up. Can anyone suggest how I might safely get the right driver or if it could be another issue?

Your corporate laptop may have restrictions that prevent installation of new drivers without IT help. If your ports are locked down, only IT can make changes to those settings. You might need to file a request for the change.

Since I’m the IT admin, getting approvals isn’t the issue, but I want to ensure the driver source is safe.

Try googling the adapter name and look for drivers on a safe site. Once you get the right ones, it should work fine.

Is the site safe? I felt a bit lost navigating it.

Windows updates usually include drivers. You can find the drivers on the Microsoft Update Catalog. Just search for your adapter's name, look for the latest version for Windows 10, extract the .cab file with 7-Zip, and update manually using the .inf file you extract.

Thanks for the tip! I'll give that a try.

You should definitely check with your corporate IT department first. They'll have the proper procedures to follow when dealing with new hardware.

Actually, I'm the IT admin for my team, so I can handle the requests myself!
