I just picked up a Dell XPS 8950 for $50, and I'm looking to upgrade the graphics card to an EVGA GeForce GTX 970 FTW GAMING ACX 2.0 (4GB). Currently, my system has a 460W power supply, but I'm not sure if that's enough. Would a 500W PSU work, or should I aim for something higher? My setup includes 8GB DDR5 RAM, a 12th Gen Intel i5-12400 processor, and my current GPU is an RX 560 running on Windows 11. I've found this 500W PSU specifically for my model online. Any advice would be appreciated!

I had the same issue with my Alienware rig—Dell loves their custom power connectors! I had to really search for a compatible PSU. Just be careful with what you choose, as not all power supplies fit other Dell boards properly. On the bright side, for $50, you're getting a nifty setup. Enjoy it!
You'll need to check if the Dell motherboard has standard power connectors. They often use proprietary connectors, which means you might not be able to just swap in any power supply. But if you're set on that 500W PSU, it should be more than enough for your GPU based on the Cooler Master PSU calculator, which suggests around 322W for your configuration without HDDs.
Good to know! I just want a decent everyday gaming setup, not looking to run intense games like Fortnite or anything. If 500W works, then I'm all in!

Exactly, it was a steal! I’d love to build my own someday, but this will do for now.
