I'm really concerned about a situation involving my boyfriend's friend. Apparently, someone has been sending threatening messages under my name, and it seems like they're trying to pin this on me. They have my first name, and the account linked is from someone who recently interacted with my boyfriend. The messages supposedly came from an IP address in my state. Is it even possible for someone to impersonate me using my IP address? I've never talked to this friend directly. I've heard that this person is even involving lawyers and potentially sending cease and desist letters. If that happens, how can I prove that I wasn't behind those messages?

It really sounds like someone is just using a fake profile to mess with you. You don't have access to see IP addresses of anyone who messages you on Facebook, and neither do they.
If someone is harassing you, the simplest thing is just to block them on Facebook and report them if they're breaking any rules. It feels like someone is just trying to take advantage of the situation and your knowledge about these scams.
I get that, but the issue is that I'm not the one getting directly harassed here. They're accusing me of being the harasser without any proof.
Just to clarify, cease and desist letters are pretty much just legal notices saying, "Stop doing that." If you do receive one, just explain that you're not doing what they think you're doing. Maybe even talk to a lawyer about sending them a response that sets the record straight.
Also, keep in mind, that's not how IP addresses usually work. Just remember, if everything is baseless, stand your ground!
This all sounds super sketchy to me. I mean, how would someone even get the actual IP addresses from Facebook? Usually, you'd need police involvement to access that kind of info from ISPs.
Exactly! And also, wouldn’t this friend need some serious tech skills to pull that off? Sounds more like a scam than anything else.
Well, I did hear from a friend in IT that technically, there's a chance someone could grab your IP if they had a specific app running while they were connected to the same network. But it's very tricky and unlikely without proper access.

Yeah, I've heard this girl claims to have lawyers and IT folks tracing the messages, but honestly, how legitimate is that?
