Feeling Burnt Out in IT—Considering My Options

I've been in the IT industry for nearly 25 years—an old school Windows admin who has embraced cloud technology and automation with PowerShell. Since August of 2022, I've been with my current organization, but I've been questioning whether I want to stick with IT for another 20 years, especially as I feel burnt out. I'm contemplating other industries to explore or IT-related positions like product engineer, pre-sales engineer, or technical account manager. After my recent performance review, I felt I didn't give my all in 2025, and on top of that, I'm navigating a divorce while raising two teenagers as a single parent. I'm seeking advice: if you left the IT field, what would you do? What recommendations do you have for IT roles that might reignite my passion?

I’ve got about 30 years in the game and I hear you—burnout is real. Consider going for a role in cybersecurity consulting; it pays well and can be quite exciting. Plus, it’s a chance to help companies fix the mistakes they’ve been ignoring. Sometimes changing your focus within the field can give you a second wind.

I had a similar journey after 25 years in infrastructure. I switched to a security role within my company, and it’s been a refreshing change! It’s challenging, but I still get to use my infrastructure background. Maybe instead of leaving IT, just look for a different role that offers a new pace.

If you’re feeling burnt out, just remember: changing jobs or industries won’t necessarily solve everything. Sometimes, it’s about fixing the underlying issues first. However, if you’ve had enough of the pressure, perhaps roles like tech sales or working with smaller organizations where you can have more autonomy might be better for you. You deserve a workplace that appreciates you!

I’ve been in IT for 17 years and often think about switching gears completely, like opening a coffee shop or something related to music. Take some time to figure out what you really enjoy. Maybe consider trades like electrical work or something hands-on that might give you the satisfaction you're looking for.

Hey, I feel you—going through a divorce is really tough, and on top of that, the IT field can drain you mentally. It’s important to prioritize your mental health right now. There are plenty of job options out there, but remember: there’s only one of you. Look after yourself first. Don’t rush into a new job while you're feeling this way; take some time to heal and regroup.
