How Can I Transition from Help Desk to a Higher-Paying SysAdmin Role?

I've been working in IT for about ten years, mostly as a help desk analyst, but I handle a lot more than just that—like managing firewalls, switches, and overall network security, as well as overseeing patching and assets. I've even implemented a hybrid Office environment and managed Active Directory. Despite my experience, it feels like there's a barrier for moving up in this field after turning 30. I'm keen on getting a title that reflects my actual job and helps me earn more than $30 an hour. What steps can I take to shift away from help desk roles and climb higher in my career?

You might want to look at other opportunities too. I have friends in network admin roles starting from desktop support positions who made the switch after about a year and a half. Being in your 30s shouldn't hold you back—I've moved up without issues at my job, and it’s all about the skills and experience you bring.

From my perspective, if you’re handling SysAdmin tasks, you should title yourself as one. The disparity between what you're doing and what you're being paid is quite significant. It’s definitely time to update your resume to reflect the true scope of your work—consider applications for SysAdmin/engineer roles elsewhere if your current job doesn’t offer advancement.

Right? It’s about having your qualifications matched with your title!

Yes! Updating your job title on your resume is crucial if you're doing that level of work.

Just keep in mind that moving around jobs might be the best way to get ahead, especially if you feel stuck. Those who actively seek new positions often find greater pay and better roles faster—even if it seems daunting at first.

To transition effectively, think about what roles you want next. For instance, if you want to go into DevOps, learning about Linux containers and scripting languages would be beneficial. Certifications from AWS or GCP could validate your knowledge in those areas. Exploring junior infrastructure engineer roles can also be a good starting point.

I totally understand where you’re coming from. I'd recommend exploring jobs that recognize your actual skill set. You know a lot about system administration, and that qualification is what you need to leverage for better pay. Don’t let age be a limiting factor; focus on your experience instead!

Have you thought about talking to your manager about changing your title? You really do more than a standard help desk analyst. Getting recognized as a System Administrator could help boost your resume and pay grade. Just ask what it would take to make that happen first, then you can negotiate for better compensation afterward or use that title to land a more suitable SysAdmin position.

That's a solid plan! Recognizing your current role officially could really make a difference.

Definitely, that’s your first step. You’re already doing the work; you just need to get the credit for it!
