How Can I Improve My Wireless Router’s Connection in a Mountain Apartment?

Hey everyone! I'm not very tech-savvy, so bear with me if this sounds like a basic question. I have a T-Mobile 5G (or maybe 4G?) wireless router, and I live in a mountain apartment. Unfortunately, the signal is pretty weak almost everywhere in the apartment, except right by the bedroom windows. I would consider moving the router there, but it would require running ethernet cables quite a distance since my boyfriend's PC doesn't have Wi-Fi capability. Right now, the router's signal fluctuates between weak and good, mostly leaning toward weak (2 bars), but by the windows, we get a 'Very Good' connection, never quite reaching excellent (5 bars).

I'm looking for suggestions on how to improve this. The router has three antenna ports, but I believe those are meant for enhancing the connection to devices inside my home, not the carrier signal. If antennas can boost my connection to T-Mobile, what kind should I look for? Alternatively, is there a reliable way to convert Wi-Fi to an ethernet connection without losing too much speed? I'm open to all solutions, within reason since we're renters. Thanks in advance for your help!

Honestly, there's not much you can do to improve the cellular connection; it just depends on your location. If you're considering an upgrade, Starlink might be a good alternative, but it can be pretty pricey.

I totally get that viewpoint, but Starlink costs more than my rent just to set up, and the monthly fees are around four times what I pay now. Not really feasible for me.

You really should place the router wherever it picks up the best cell reception. They usually recommend putting it by a window during setup. For the ethernet connection, consider running one cable that goes to a switch if there are multiple devices that need to connect. If the modem allows for an external antenna, that could help, but you'll need to run a wire either way.

Got it! Thanks for the tip! An external antenna sounds like it could really help with my apartment layout. I appreciate it!

I think the best idea is to place the router where it catches the best signal from T-Mobile. For your boyfriend's PC, a USB wireless adapter could be a quick fix, and they're often inexpensive and easy to install. Those three antennas are probably for enhancing your home network, but you should definitely use them for better Wi-Fi!

Thanks for the advice! I've mentioned the USB adapter before, but he's pretty stubborn about it not working with his setup. I think he might just not know enough about it. I'll definitely suggest it again, and I'll also check out those antennas for the router!

The antenna ports probably won’t do much for you since the issue is the distance to T-Mobile's tower, not your connection to devices. You could get a mesh extender positioned near the window to grab the signal and connect it to your boyfriend's PC via ethernet. But honestly, living in the mountains means you might have to expect weaker internet compared to the city. Moving the router to the bedroom might be the simplest solution.
