Confused About My Laptop Battery’s Original Capacity—Help!

I'm using an HP Pavilion x360 with Windows 11 and checked my battery's health through a report. It shows that both the design capacity and full charge capacity are 29,178 mWh, but the battery history indicates that in 2023, these values were 40,748 mWh. I'm confused because I thought the design capacity represents the original capacity and shouldn't change. Does this suggest that my original battery capacity was actually 40,748 mWh and has now degraded to 29,178 mWh?

Definitely, the 40,748 mWh seems to be the original battery capacity. Batteries degrade naturally, so seeing the design capacity lower now is pretty common. If you're worried about your battery life or performance, just keep monitoring its health and consider replacing it if it gets too low.

Design capacity generally shouldn't change, but the full charge capacity will typically decrease over time as the battery ages. Different manufacturers might report these metrics in various ways, and if the design capacity isn't being clearly monitored, it could lead to some confusion. In your case, it sounds like the initial 40,748 mWh reflects the original battery state, and the drop to 29,178 mWh indicates degradation over time.

If you're curious about how long the battery lasts on its own, a neat trick is to boot into the BIOS without any OS running. Just leave the laptop on that BIOS screen and unplug it. That way, you can see how long it’ll run without being connected to the charger.
