I took my iPhone to the Apple Store for a camera lens repair and unexpectedly received a replacement phone without being clearly informed. When I picked it up, I was handed a new device and only found out later that my original phone was replaced due to damage during the repair. Now I'm noticing that I've lost photos from January 9 to March 7, and all my workout data from the Fitness app since December 11 is gone. My old phone still appears in Find My iPhone as being at the Apple Store location. Apple support has opened a senior support case, but I'm curious if anyone else has gone through this and if your data was able to resync from iCloud, or if there was something more I needed to do to recover it.

A back glass or camera lens repair usually involves the whole device since those parts are integrated into the enclosure. Typically, they should communicate that your phone might be replaced, and if they didn’t, it’s worth bringing up your concerns to a specialist in the store.
It might be best to revisit the store and clarify everything. Their senior support may not address the data loss effectively. If your new phone isn’t set up with iCloud correctly, that could explain the missing photos and fitness data. Some settings can affect whether everything syncs or not.
Thanks for the reply! I have an appointment at the store tomorrow to sort this out.
If you're missing items, check icloud.com to see if they're available there. Photos sync separately, so even a backup might not include everything if it wasn’t updated before the swap.
I’ve looked for the photos but can’t find my workouts either – still trying to figure out how to recover that data.
Just to clarify, Apple takes no responsibility for on-device data loss. Their policy is that you should backup your data prior to any service. Sometimes repairs can lead to full replacements, and it’s a good practice to confirm the details of your repair with the staff during pickup.
I signed a form for the back glass replacement, and I don't think they mentioned a full device replacement could happen.
Apple doesn't guarantee data preservation during repairs, so they expect users to back everything up beforehand. Make sure to check that you have indeed backed up your data before getting any kind of service.
I double-checked and my other iPhone shows it was backed up yesterday, but I still don't see the missing photos.

Just because that’s often the case doesn’t mean it was right for your situation. But you’re right, they should have properly informed you during pickup.
