I was in a Google Meet class and had a 30-minute break, so I left my laptop as is. When I returned to the call, I found my screen had gone black and a quick update started without my consent. I'm really curious about why this happened. Can anyone explain?

I have a hunch on this one. Windows usually tries to prompt you for updates, but if your meeting software muted those notifications, it may have gone ahead with the update anyway. It seems like the timing was just bad for you!
Regularly checking for updates and restarting your computer helps too. If you leave it off for a while, it can catch you off guard like this, so don’t forget to reboot it frequently!
Make sure you adjust the options for updates to ask before installing anything. If it's set to update automatically, that's likely what happened. You don't want it taking control during important moments!
This was probably just a standard 'urgent' update to install more unnecessary features. Microsoft’s approach seems to push AI at us whether we like it or not. Just be thankful your laptop still works after that!
True! Even with Pro, the limitations can be frustrating. Fortunately, there are workarounds like the Always Active Hours tool to help you manage updates better.
It sounds like your update settings might need a tweak. Usually, Windows gives you a heads-up before it restarts for updates. Check to see if you have it set to notify you first.
You're probably right. Normally I’d get a notification, but not this time. I’ll look into it later, thanks!
Ah, the classic Microsoft move! This kind of thing is why many people are switching to Linux. Windows doesn't really give you the choice you think you have when it comes to updates.

I didn’t even turn off my laptop; I just muted myself in the call! I did everything in a browser, so I wasn't expecting that.
