Should I Upgrade My PC Bit by Bit or Build a New One?

Hey everyone, I've been thinking about whether I should upgrade my current PC setup step-by-step or just go for a completely new build. Currently, my system includes a 1660 ti 6GB, a Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB DDR4 RAM at 3000MHz, and a Seasonic Focus-GX 650W PSU, all of which I bought between 2018 and 2019. I'm considering upgrading to a 9060XT 16GB graphics card and possibly a 5700X CPU since I'm maxing out my RAM while gaming, especially with titles like World of Warcraft and Path of Exile. I can add another 16GB of DDR4 to improve my RAM situation. If I build new, I plan to keep my RAM and storage but might upgrade to a B550 motherboard for better compatibility. Would love to hear your thoughts on the best approach!

Upgrading your CPU and GPU sounds like a plan! If you want to save some cash, you might keep your SSDs and get a new case if needed. Just make sure your PSU has enough juice for the new build.

I have two SSDs already, so I can reuse those too. My PSU should handle the new 9600XT and 5700X just fine!

If you're looking to upgrade, going for a new B550 motherboard sounds smart, especially since you'll be able to add newer GPUs. Otherwise, just swap parts while keeping your existing motherboard.

Yeah, a B550 would let you take advantage of Gen 4 PCIe slots, but your current setup is way outdated.

If you want to keep costs down and just upgrade parts, skip the motherboard change. If you're considering a B550, you may as well go for a full new build with AM5 and DDR5. Otherwise, it feels like a half-measure.

That’s a fair point, but have you seen how high DDR5 prices are right now?

It really depends on your budget! If you've got around 5k, you could build a new system from scratch.

I mentioned my potential new parts in the post, so I’m not going for a full 5k build.

I had this dilemma last year too. I tried upgrading just my GPU, but then my PSU couldn't handle it, and I ended up replacing a ton of parts gradually. Honestly, if you’re still on early DDR4, starting fresh might save you a lot of headaches.

My PSU's a reliable 650W, so I believe it’ll manage. Age is a concern, but the brand is solid.

If you play CPU-heavy games, it might be worth looking into an R7 5800XT instead of the 5700X; they’re pretty affordable right now and offer better performance. Just keep an eye on your PSU capacity while upgrading.
