I'm an IT student specializing in networking, and I'm looking to transition away from Windows. I love the Windows graphical user interface but dislike Microsoft's policies. I'm unsure about which Linux distribution is best for personal use, considering I may also need software compatibility for team projects and future server management. I'd appreciate any recommendations or tips for a smooth transition!

If you're looking for a solid choice for networking environments, I'd recommend Debian. It's a standard for many network setups. Ubuntu is another great option for personal use and it's widely supported, especially in educational institutions. Make sure you check with your school about what distributions they use for their systems. If you're in North America, Ubuntu is likely to be a solid fit!

Thanks for your input! I've heard they mainly use Windows Server 2019, so I might need to adapt a bit.

Honestly, the specific distro might not be that crucial. For enterprise, you could look into Fedora since it's the testing ground for Red Hat, or stick with Debian as it's stable and widely used on servers. It would help to know what programs you need though!

I primarily work with coding, network simulators, and firewalls. Ease of use and privacy are important for me.

Lately, I've been enjoying CachyOS with KDE Plasma for desktops. If you want something around ease of use, Linux Mint with XFCE is a solid choice too. Just make sure the software you need runs well on Linux; some apps like Adobe Illustrator are tricky without a Windows or Mac setup!

Do you have experience with Debian? How does it compare for you?

If you want a fun way to decide, try the Distro Hopper Wheel! It adds a bit of randomness to your distro selection process. Who knows, you might discover something great!

That actually sounds like a blast! I'll check it out.
