I'm a Data Engineer with a focus on data warehousing and ETL processes, and I'm interested in learning web development to build my own website. I'm unsure how to select a domain name and a server, and I also wonder if it's okay to use a host based overseas.

Don't stress too much about the domain; just keep it short, memorable, and related to you or what you do. A .com domain is often the safest bet if you can snag it, but other TLDs work too. For your server, a simple VPS will do for starting out. DigitalOcean is great—it’s easy to set up and perfect for learning. Just deploy your app and you can scale it up later as you grow your skills, plus using overseas providers is totally fine—most people do it!

For your domain, go with a reputable provider like GoDaddy or NameCheap. Choose your server based on what you need and where your users are. Just remember, a server that's far away can lead to higher latency. As long as your server is in the same region as your audience, you should be good to go!

Yeah, I agree, NameCheap has great customer service! For hosting, if you're just starting, consider DigitalOcean or Linode. They're affordable and user-friendly. Just make sure the data center is close to your users if you choose an overseas provider.

Be cautious when choosing an overseas provider. Some domain providers can be sketchy. I personally like Porkbun. And if you're stuck for ideas, you can check out my domain name generator at plenty.domains!
