I've been excited about the release of Crimson Desert and am considering getting a new hard drive. My laptop on its own isn't ideal for high-end gaming, so I was thinking about using an external SSD. Can an SSD actually run the game and process it while directly connected to my laptop, similar to how you connect a console to a TV? If that's not feasible, should I focus on upgrading my laptop instead?

You might want to check your laptop specs compared to the recommended specs for Crimson Desert. If there's a big gap, upgrading your laptop could definitely be the way to go. If you just need more space, an SSD can help with load times, but don’t expect miracles.
An SSD is mainly for storage, so it can certainly speed up loading times for your games, but it can't help your laptop actually run them. The processing power relies on your CPU and GPU, so if those aren't up to par, an external SSD won't change that. If gaming is your goal, you might want to save up for a new laptop instead.
It’s good to clarify that while an SSD will help load games faster, it won’t improve your laptop's performance in terms of running the game. If your laptop's specs don’t meet the game’s requirements, you’ll still need some hardware upgrades.
If you're just looking for extra storage, go for an SSD over an external HDD, as it can improve loading times significantly. I use a few Samsung T5s myself, and they work well, but remember that SSDs won’t fix underlying performance issues with your laptop.
By using an external SSD, you're just giving your laptop more room for games. However, it won't be able to run them better than it already does. For performance, focus on the CPU and GPU. If that's lacking, you might want to think about upgrading those first.
