Hey everyone! I'm currently upgrading my HP Pavilion 590-p0089 office PC and I'm at the point where I want to change the CPU. I've checked the compatibility on Gigabyte's site, but I'm a bit confused because the chipset is listed as "AMD Promontory FCH". I found that B450 is one of the chipsets that supports some CPUs, including the Ryzen 7 1700. However, their list mentions the Ryzen 5 5500 as compatible, which isn't listed on the official specs page. Should I go ahead and buy the Ryzen 5 5500, or is it safer to pick a CPU that's explicitly on that list, like the Ryzen 7 2700? Your input would really help me, as I need to keep my budget in check and I'm just looking for a small upgrade, not top-tier gaming performance.

Generally, OEM HP motherboards don't support as wide a range of CPUs as custom boards do, even if they share the same chipset. HP often doesn't release BIOS updates for newer CPUs, so if it's not on the compatibility list, it probably won't work at all. I’d recommend sticking with a CPU that's confirmed on the list. Better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks for the heads up! I guess I’ll go with what's on the list then. It’s a bummer about the Ryzen 7 2700 being pricier for less performance, though.
