Should I go ahead with a new PC build or hold off?

I'm debating whether to upgrade my current PC build. My wife thinks I should go for it, but I'm struggling with the cost. Microcenter has a tempting deal for a 9850X3D processor, motherboard, and DDR5 RAM, plus I'd also buy a 5070 Ti GPU. There seems to be a more general preference for the 5070 Ti over the 5080. Currently, my setup includes an R5 5600X CPU, a Zotac 3080 GPU, and 32GB of 3000MHz DDR4 RAM. I play games at 4K resolution and 144Hz, but I have to run everything on lower settings to get around 90-110 FPS. Newer titles are especially taxing. I mainly game on titles like COD, Borderlands, Forza, and Battlefield, but I'm open to other fun games too. Should I pull the trigger on this upgrade or wait it out to see if the component shortages improve? It feels like nothing will change soon, certainly not this year. By the way, I plan to give my current build to my wife, so there's no selling it for cash back!

I just upgraded to a 7800X3D combo with a 5070 Ti, and I’ve been really pleased with the performance, especially with current pricing. Going for an upgrade at Microcenter sounds smart right now!

Nice! Do you play at 4K too?

At 4K, your GPU is likely the main bottleneck. The upgrades you mentioned are pretty incremental. You might see some gains, but a better strategy could be to upgrade your GPU first, then assess if the CPU needs an upgrade down the road. Also, watch out for RAM quality; sometimes Microcenter’s bundles can be a bit lower quality than what you’d want.

Honestly, the deal is tempting, but don’t expect huge performance gains outside of the GPU. At high resolutions, the impact of the CPU is less significant. Unless you’re looking to significantly boost your framerate or stream while gaming, sticking with a GPU upgrade might be the way to go.

Tough choices! I might just focus on the GPU upgrade for now and reassess later, especially with my wife needing the current rig.

If your wife wants your current build, that's a solid reason to upgrade! You’ll definitely benefit from the new components, and grabbing a deal like that can really help offset the costs. If it's in your budget, go for it!

True, having my wife’s support is key! I've been using my current setup since early 2022—so a nice refresh would be great!
