I've got an old Dell XPS 8500 with some decent specs: an i7-3770 processor, Radeon HD 7770 graphics, and 8GB of DDR3 RAM. I'm looking to use this computer mainly for emulation, light gaming, and as a media center. It runs well on Windows 10, but Windows 11 is just too sluggish. I want to switch to Linux for better performance and security since I also use it for network storage. I tried Bazzite but ran into some tricky Samba issues that I couldn't resolve. So now I'm curious about other distros that might be easier to set up for network sharing while still supporting gaming. Even if some setup is required for gaming, I'd love any recommendations!

Your i7-3770 is still a solid chip! It should handle many tasks quite well even today. Just a minor upgrade or tweak could really extend its life.
I recommend checking out CachyOS as an alternative to Bazzite. It's great for gaming and has some hardware optimizations that might work well for your setup.
I’ll definitely check it out! What I like about it is that it's mutable. Bazzite seemed pretty good in theory but felt a bit restricted in practice.
Honestly, considering a new setup could be worthwhile. You can get something much more powerful without breaking the bank—like around $200.
This PC is mainly for my family to use for retro gaming and streaming from my NAS, and it does that really well! I do have a modern setup for my personal use.
If you're looking for a versatile distro, Fedora might be your best bet. It’s actually well-rounded for a mix of tasks, including gaming.
Fedora will likely be the first one I try since Bazzite is based on it and runs pretty smoothly on my PC. Just hope I don't run into that Samba bug from Bazzite.

Yeah, I've been impressed with it! It's been reliable for almost a decade. The graphics card does hold it back a bit, but it manages PS3 emulation surprisingly well.
