Should I Upgrade to AM5 or Stick with AM4?

I'm thinking about upgrading my PC and I have two main options: I could either stick with the AM4 platform and get a Ryzen 5700X3D for around $250 or a 5800X3D for about $350, along with a new motherboard for around $100. On the other hand, I found a good deal for an AM5 setup that includes a Ryzen 7 8700F and a B650M motherboard for $235. My main use for the PC is gaming, but I'm experiencing lag issues while playing Deadlock with my current setup, which includes a Ryzen 5 5600 and an RX 6700XT. Since my current motherboard has a RAM issue preventing my new 32GB 3200MHz RAM from fitting, I need to buy a new one regardless. While I know AM5 might seem cheaper now, I'm also aware I'll have to invest in new DDR5 RAM, which currently costs around $122. I'm fine with spending the money, but I want to make the best choice. Any suggestions?

Finding new 5700/5800X3D chips can be tricky, especially with the current demand. Your Ryzen 5600 is still a good CPU, though. If you’re having trouble, it might be worth investigating other issues, not just the CPU or GPU. And what do you mean your RAM doesn't fit?

So, I bought RAM to upgrade from 16GB to 32GB, but it just won't fit in my motherboard. I tried my RAM in my friend's rig and it works fine, so it’s definitely a motherboard issue.

If you're already looking at a new motherboard, you should definitely consider going with AM5. It could save you some hassle down the road.

Your RAM issue sounds frustrating! But honestly, if your motherboard is the problem and you're already considering a new one, go for AM5. Also, be careful with DDR5 pricing though; it’s inflated right now. However, the 5600 should still serve you well for gaming, unless Deadlock specifically is heavy on CPU usage.

I feel like it might be better to just upgrade the CPU. My CPU utilization hits max but my memory doesn't seem affected. Seems like that could be the bottleneck.

Have you thought about checking the second-hand market for CPUs? You could snag a good deal there. As for your GPU, I think it’s adequate for the moment. Maybe do a thermal paste change when you upgrade your system too!

First off, what are your CPU and GPU usage stats while gaming? With a Ryzen 5600 and a 6700XT, you should be fine for 1080p gaming, so it’s a bit odd you’re having issues. That said, $250 for the 5700X3D looks like a solid option if you stick with AM4!

I checked, and during gameplay, my GPU was only around 50% utilized.
