Why Is My Car Connecting to a Random WiFi Network?

Recently, my car has been unexpectedly connecting to a locked WiFi network that I didn't set up or pay for. This started happening just a few days ago, and it has never occurred before. When I check with my phone, it shows the network as private with a rotating address. I'm really concerned, especially with stories I've heard about stalkers. Could this be a potential security issue, or is there another explanation? I can share photos of the connection if needed!

Definitely check your phone's hotspot settings! Sometimes, phones can connect to the car through their own settings. Also, try looking for that WiFi network in your car's settings and see if you can forget it. However, if the car is still connecting even when your phone is far away, that's a bit strange!

I tried that! I even left my phone out of range, but the car still linked up to the WiFi. This network doesn’t show when the car is off, which is confusing.

It sounds like your car might be connecting to a WiFi network that it remembers from the previous owner. If your car has been able to connect to this network effortlessly, it probably knows the password because it was saved from before. Sometimes, people forget to remove their WiFi settings when they sell a vehicle. It’s doubtful this is a security issue related to stalkers; it’s likely just picking up a nearby network. If you frequently drive by the previous owner's house, that's probably why!

That makes sense! But wouldn’t that mean your car has some kind of memory for these networks? Can you remove those WiFi settings?

It could be that your car is just picking up nearby WiFi signals. If you can’t see the network when the car is off, that’s unusual. Check the advanced settings for anything called 'hotspot 2.0' and try disabling it. If that doesn’t work, consider resetting the network and Bluetooth settings in the car’s system to eliminate any saved connections.
