Need Help Choosing a Motherboard for Ryzen 9950X3D and RTX 5090

Hey everyone! I'm thinking of upgrading my PC to set myself up for the next 3-6 years. I'm quite the hardware novice, so I could really use some guidance.

Here's what I already have:
- A Corsair HX 850 Platinum modular PSU (not sure if it's enough)
- 64GB DDR5 6400 RAM (unused)
- Four Samsung 990 Pro 4TB NVMe SSDs
- Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 57" screen (7680 x 2160 resolution)

I'm looking to get:
- An AMD Ryzen 9950X3D
- An RTX 5090

Here are my main questions:
1. For the PSU, should I go with a 1200W or 1500W?
2. For the motherboard, I use several USB peripherals and external storage, plus a VR headset and sim racing wheel, so I need plenty of ports. I'm considering some X870/X870E options like the MSI, Asus, Gigabyte, or NZXT models. My budget is around $300-350, but I'm open to spending more if it's really worth it. I'm especially interested in running multiple NVMe drives and possibly adding some SSDs.

Here's my current shortlist for motherboards:
- ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E DARK HERO
- MSI MEG X870E ACE MAX
- Gigabyte X870E AORUS MASTER X3D ICE
- MSI MPG X870E CARBON WIFI
- ASUS PROART X870E-CREATOR WIFI

My main use cases will be video editing (4K delivery and 6K braw footage), 3D modeling, and (VR) gaming, where smooth gameplay is more important than max settings.

You might want to rethink getting the RTX 5090 since some users report overheating issues. If you're looking for good value, consider the RTX 5080 or the RTX 5070 Ti – they perform great for 4K and 1440p without the added risk. For motherboards, check out the MSI MAG X870 TOMAHAWK WIFI, which is priced around $240. For power supplies, if you go with the 5070 Ti, an 850W PSU should do. The 5080 would be better supported with a 1000W PSU.

The 5080 and 5070 Ti are solid choices! While the RTX 5090 has its issues, it does offer some impressive VR and editing capabilities. I'm not a max-settings gamer, so I'll be fine as long as everything runs smoothly. Appreciate the mobo suggestion!

If you're interested in top-tier performance, the 9950X3D2 is expected to be released soon. Just keep in mind that it might be pricier, and investing in that could push your budget even further!

Yeah, I've heard about it but I'm already stretching my budget as it is. I've yet to see any price predictions, though!

I've been using MSI motherboards for over 25 years without any issues, so I’d recommend sticking with them! A 1200W PSU should be more than sufficient for your setup. Just a heads up, avoid both NZXT and Asrock for AMD CPUs – they tend to cause overheating problems.

Totally agree! MSI boards are solid for high-quality builds.
