My HP Desktop Won’t Update: Can It Be Fixed?

I've got an HP Pavilion desktop from 2017 or 2018 that's been struggling to install the latest Windows 11 update. It features an i5 processor, 16 GB of RAM, and originally had a 1 TB HDD. Even after clearing some space by moving music to OneDrive, it still stuck at 0% for the update and scans for malware. After a restart, I hit a BSOD with a critical service failed error and now it keeps showing 'diagnosing PC' and 'repairing PC.' I attempted to uninstall the last quality update but ran into an error. I've also tried running the chkdsk command in the command prompt for some troubleshooting. I have an external hard drive for my music back-up since I have over 800 GB on the computer. Is my desktop beyond repair, or can it be fixed even with its age and these update issues?

Before going for a full reinstall, ensure your data is backed up. If the install doesn't go smoothly again, it could hint at deeper hardware issues, especially if the desktop is older. Sometimes a simple hardware upgrade could solve ongoing problems without needing an entire system redo.

To properly tackle those BSOD errors, start by checking for dump files that can provide more insight. If your Windows boots, or you can access Safe Mode, take a look in C:WindowsMinidump for any dump files. Zip up that folder and upload it to a file-sharing site. More dump files give us a better chance at pinpointing the issue. Also, consider adjusting your minidump settings for better logging if you haven't done that yet.

If you're okay with losing everything except your music, a clean install of Windows 11 via a bootable USB drive might be your best bet. Just remember, you'll need another working PC to create that USB. It could help clear out any lingering issues for good.
