Should I Upgrade to an RTX 5070 Ti or RTX 5080 for 3440×1440 Gaming?

Hey folks! I'm considering a GPU upgrade and would love your insights, especially if you're familiar with ultrawide gaming. Currently, I have an RTX 3070 paired with a Ryzen 9 5900X and 32 GB of DDR4 3600 MHz RAM, and I'm gaming on a 3440x1440 ultrawide monitor. My goal is to enjoy modern AAA games at ultra settings with ray tracing on, aiming for over 100 FPS. Games like Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2, and God of War Ragnarok are often causing my 3070 to struggle with stuttering and low FPS, especially with VRAM limits. I'm torn between upgrading to an RTX 5070 Ti or stepping up to an RTX 5080. My budget can stretch to the 5080, but I'm concerned about possible CPU bottlenecking with my 5900X. I've seen claims that it might restrict performance by 8-15% compared to newer CPUs. In real-world terms, would the 5900X significantly hold back the 5080? Is the upgrade from 5070 Ti to 5080 worth it for stability and performance in demanding titles? I'm not after maxing out FPS but want smooth gameplay with good frametimes. Any experience or advice would be super helpful! Thank you!

I have an RTX 5080 myself and I can say it can drop below 60 FPS during intense scenes in games like Alan Wake 2, even with DLSS Performance mode. So, if budget isn’t a huge worry, definitely consider getting the 5080. Your 5900X is solid, but it might struggle with high demand games at ultra settings, especially if you're shooting for 100 FPS.

Yeah, my 5900X had some hindrances with more demanding games too. You might need to upgrade later if the bottlenecks become annoying.

Good point. The 5900X can definitely get challenged by those games.

If money isn’t a concern, get the 5080 without question. No doubt about it!

Whatever you choose, the 5080 is going to outperform the 5070 Ti. Both options are leaps ahead of your 3070, especially with DLSS.

If you can easily budget for the RTX 5080, go for it! The extra graphics power at high resolutions is always beneficial. Ignore those bottleneck calculators; they can be misleading. Performance varies greatly depending on the game and setup. Generally, with a modern CPU-gPU combo, you'll find the GPU limits your framerate more often, especially in AAA games.

Totally agree! The bottleneck varies, and you should focus more on your gaming experience than what numbers say.

Yeah, I’ve experienced the same thing. In many games, my GPU is the main limiting factor.

Getting the 5080 paired with your 5900X isn’t a bad idea. You might not be fully utilizing the GPU's potential right now, but it’ll be future-proofed until the next big GPU leap happens. I replaced my 3070 with a 5080 and it's been a game changer. Much better performance and cooling compared to the 3070.

SilentHunter42 -

Exactly! I did the same thing, and I’ve noticed significant improvements.

FutureReady23 -

Right? The 5080 is definitely a worthwhile upgrade!

At 3440x1440, expect to see about a 10-15% performance hit compared to regular 1440p, so the 5080 will perform better when you push those settings to max. If it's within reach, the 5080 is definitely a smart choice.
