Looking for Mailgun Alternatives: IP Blocking Issues

Hey everyone,

I've been using Mailgun for a while without any problems. However, recently I've started facing issues with sending transactional emails, especially to users with live.com or yahoo.com email addresses. My emails keep failing because the IP address is getting blocked.

I've reached out to Mailgun, and they mentioned that another customer is abusing the service, which causes the IP to be blacklisted. This is frustrating because I'm sharing the IP with others, and it makes my emails bounce until they assign me a new one. Unfortunately, this cycle seems to repeat itself every time.

What alternatives to Mailgun do you recommend that have high email deliverability and offer a dedicated IP at a reasonable monthly cost?

I've started using Porkbun for my domains and email services, and it's been great so far—no issues! The platform has its own control panel and everything you need for email management. Just a heads up, though: it doesn't support mass mailing, but for general transactional emails, it works well. Google Workspace is an option for mailing but you can't do mass emails there either!

Yep, both Google's suite and Porkbun restrict bulk emailing, so if that's a requirement, you'll need a dedicated platform.

I had similar problems with Mailgun before. Getting a dedicated IP is the way to go, but I had a nightmare experience with that years ago. The first couple they gave me were on public blacklists, and after that, getting a working IP was a hassle because they just stopped responding to my requests. Nowadays, I'm using Sendgrid with a dedicated IP, and I've had way fewer issues. Just keep in mind that even with Sendgrid, it's possible to get banned without sending any emails if they don't like your activity.

I've noticed that Yahoo and Live are really tough on IPs, especially if you send multiple connections. Their cooling periods can be super long, even for legitimate emails. Because of this, we had to block signups from those domains and let users know they should use other email providers. It’s not ideal, but it saves a lot of headaches!

If you're looking for a dedicated option, Sendgrid is reasonably priced and can work well. However, I chose to go with a self-hosted solution called Postal, and I'm really happy with it. It's great for managing inbound emails too, which has been a big advantage for my needs. Check out their documentation for more info: https://docs.postalserver.io/
