I've been dealing with a really frustrating issue on my laptop for the past month or so where it just freezes randomly for a few seconds. It's not a crash or a blue screen; everything just pauses—my mouse stops moving, whatever is on screen freezes, and the audio gets stuck in a loop, making this weird 'A-A-A-A-A' sound. Then, out of nowhere, it just resumes like nothing happened.
I checked the Event Viewer, but it doesn't show anything at those times. This freezing happens whether I'm gaming or just sitting on the desktop listening to music. When the system resumes, my CPU usage looks fine, disk usage is normal, and temperatures are okay.
Sometimes, after these freezes, the audio completely dies, and I need to switch "Spatial Sound" settings around to get the sound back. Interestingly, on CS2, voice chat usually works again, but in Fortnite, I can see my friend talking but can't hear him until I change the audio output back and forth. I'm not sure if the freezing is connected to these audio issues.
I've tried various troubleshooting steps suggested by AI, including checking DPC latency, disabling PCIe Link State Power Management, turning off the Wi-Fi adapter, and adjusting power settings, but nothing has worked. Here are my specs:
- Ryzen 5 8645HS
- RTX 3050 6GB GPU
- 16GB RAM
- Kioxia NVMe SSD
- Windows 11
- Always plugged in
- Ethernet connection
- External monitor (2560x1440 @ 144Hz) connected directly to the NVIDIA GPU.
The one time I disconnected my external monitor and just used the laptop screen, I didn't notice any issues, but I can't tell if that was just luck. Can anyone help me figure out why my laptop keeps freezing like this? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

It might help to check your BIOS settings, but definitely back up your data first—just in case something goes wrong there. Sometimes changes in BIOS can lead to unexpected behavior. Also, keep an eye on your dump files in the C:WindowsMinidump folder if any BSODs ever occur; those logs can provide clues about what's going wrong.
It sounds like you might be dealing with some CPU spikes when your laptop freezes. CS2 tends to be more CPU-heavy, so make sure to check for any malware using Malwarebytes; you could have something slowing things down. Also, try disabling any unnecessary background programs since they could eat up resources.
And since the lag seems to happen less when you’re not using the external monitor, it might be worth experimenting with the monitor settings. Try using a lower resolution for testing to see if that helps reduce the freezes.
You mentioned having 16GB of RAM, which is usually enough, but sometimes laptops may need to clear the memory cache if it’s overloaded. That could cause those temporary freezes. It might also help to ensure all your drivers are up to date. The freezing issue seems pretty random, so it’s tough to pinpoint, but keeping your system updated could possibly help.
